Evening, Y'all or is it Ya'll?

Ok, I realized I have a growing backlog of sketches and if I don't start kicking up the postings a notch, I'll never catch up. So here's sum mo'fer yer azzes. These are some of my Amsterdam sketches. As you may know, weed is legal there...Infer what you will....

The Stop Aids Campaign artwork

Someone made a suggestion in the comments section a while back that I post this artwork I did for a non-profit up in Northern Cali about seven years ago (boy, time is like the wind...). It was a fun project overall and turned out very nicely in print with a cd of music by my friend, Tim'm West. A very nice campaign from beginning to end and if I can find the pamphlet the art was used for in the finished piece, I'll post that too. The final drawing in the set included below had to be doctored heavily in the final printing of the brochure by obscuring the figures having sex (which I thought was the whole point of the campaign!)for reasons I'm not sure of. Most likely the person cutting the check was sex-negative or someone on one of those mysterious gay non-profit committees got their panties in a wad. Regardless, the final product looked nice and the people I worked with were professional and organized (which ain't always the case with non-profs...smile). Enjoy!

...Later that Day....

So I woke up this morning with the first two sketches in my head and immediately drew them. I haven't drawn men in pumps since '92 so everything old is new again, I suppose. The first "Belasco" imagery I produced when I got started was a lot more androgynous, mind fuck stuff, but then again, the early 90's was still coming off the ambiguity of the late 80's, so I guess the art I produced then was the residual effect. The hyper masculine/ explicitly sexual stuff didn't come until a few years later, coinciding with all the DL crap that descended like Burbank smog over black gay cultural life. I feel that with my change in the direction of my artwork, including who and how I draw, the smog is finally lifting. Hopefully for black gay culture as well. I'll step down off my well-worn soapbox now. Enjoy!

Th' Dawg Dayz...

I hope everyone's enjoying their summer...I know I am! A few of these may look familiar to you since I've posted them before, but I decided to go back thru and clean up some of the drawings a bit and get rid of the scanner schmutz and stuff on the original scans. Who knows? I may end up putting them in a book some day....
