a better shot of 'Shhhhh'

This is a sculpture I finished a few months ago called "Shhhh".

Misc. sculpts or gimme sum heads? owch

I like it rough...

The first image is a rough sketch for a sculpture I'm currently working on and the second image is the sculptures after I've baked them. Next up will be the finished painted pieces. Stay Tuned....

Keepin' em cummin'

This was the second major sculpture I did that started me on my current sculpting obsession. The first was the bust of Boo that can be seen in the last post. This one is probably the largest bust I've done to date and I love, love, love it. I haven't had the inspiration to do another this large yet, but I know its cummin'. Enjoy!

Shhhhh!

I haven't updated much since before the long MLK weekend. Went to D.C. Enjoyed it and it enjoyed me! So anyway, here are some earlier sculptures for your viewing pleasure. I know this blog is entitled Belasco Comix, so eventually I'll be posting some actual comic art.

Amos

Hey there, thought I'd just post this pic of a sculpt I finished right before the last one. As you can see, I like to switch it up.

voila'!

Well here is the final sculpted bust with paint. After I've sufficiently built up the layers of Super Sculpty modelling clay over an aluminum foil base, I sand the sculpture smooth and apply fast drying oil paints. They really work well to simulate the look of flesh, particularly darker skinned flesh tones. For this one I actually used paint labeled "flesh". Usually I find these paints unsatisfactory, since they rarely look like real flesh, but by adding some umber and vermillion paint, I got a nice approximation of flesh for this sculpture. I like how it turned out, but I always tend to like them when they're first finished. Enjoy!

Belasco sculpts too!

Well i didn't let any grass grow under my feet between posts, did I? I thought while this is all fresh and new for me, i'd post some things I've been working on recently. This is a new sculpture I've just started. I've really been on a roll lately with the sculptures. In the past, I'd do one or two and not touch the clay for a year or so. But over the last few months, I've averaged about one every couple of weeks. Anyway, this newest one is sort of inspired by that really hot picture of Tookie Williams from the 70s that was circulated shortly before his execution. I usually start with a sketch of the sculpture I have in mind and do several views of it. Then I begin sculpting by making a wire armarture covered in tin foil that I then begin applying super sculpty clay too. Its a polymer clay that fires hard in a regular convection oven. A wonderful product! Anyway, I've included images of my original sketch and where I am in the process of sculpting. Enjoy!

My first entry

Welcome to the Belasco Comix blog spot. In lieu of an actual website...(it's cummin', it's cummin'!) I decided to set this up as a way for my fans to get at me, as it were. My last try at having a website, while nicely done, really didn't work for me and was ultimately a frustrating experience. So until I rethink exactly what I want from a site, I'll use this space to post rough sketches, pieces of art in progress and whatever else that crosses my mind that I think you guys might be interested in. Occasionally, I will offer limited edition self published books for sale. I'm always drawing and creating but the business of publishing all the artwork takes time. Hopefully having the input and inspiration from you all will help me get my act together. Anyway, thanks for checkin' me out and be sure to cum back now, y'hear?
